My Journey Towards Story Telling

Updated: May 4

For each person, something is very important in life. I have a policy of doing what I like for at least some time each day. That self-satisfaction is very important to me.

My Passion for Coding

The first time I saw a computer was a desktop at my school in the late 90s. I was extremely curious and really eager to just use it. It took a long time, but when I got the first chance, I was so excited, even if it was just DOS prompt commands. My passion for coding grew from my high school days, resulting in my decision to take computer science as my primary focus. Luckily, I got into Information Technology course for my engineering degree in college. It paved the way for me to land a job as a developer in a tech company through a campus interview.

I finally got to do what I really wanted to do - write code and develop webpages. Whenever something new comes my way technically, I always get excited and I will not rest until I have achieved the desired result. I couldn't possibly tell how many hours I worked in a day during the first four years of my career as a Full-Stack Developer. There were some sleepless days too. It wasn't work for me; I utterly enjoyed development and passionately did all the things. There was a time when I couldn't think of doing anything else other than coding for the rest of my life.

The Idea of Story Telling

Unfortunately, the excitement didn't last long enough for me. After almost six years of a successful career, for the first time, I wasn't feeling fully satisfied with what I was doing during 2017. On one odd summer evening, the thought of writing came to me. From my childhood, I liked storytelling. I had listened to plenty of stories, especially on Hindu epics. The more I listened, the more I wanted to know and read a lot of texts. I did try to write fictional stories around the age of ten, but I didn't get the encouragement needed at that stage, resulting in dropping the idea.

The boom of self-publishing was happening at the right time for me, around 2017. Finally decided to write my first full fictional book. From the moment I started writing, it was fascinating and challenging for me. Transferring what I pictured in my mind to written format was a pure adrenaline rush. Due to my limited vocabulary and lack of literature knowledge, I did struggle a lot, but eventually, somehow completed the book. The joy I got while I was writing the book prompted me to continue doing it. Though I might not be that good at writing, I decided I will keep on doing it while trying to improve every time.

Career Switch to Fictional Author

Due to my full-time job, I only had time during weekends to write. As I continued to write, the ideas kept coming. I always wanted to write fantasy stories with a new world and a new set of rules. Around 2019, a huge idea came to me. The more I thought about it, the scope just got bigger and bigger. I was unable to spend enough time on writing because of other priorities.

It was around 2022 when I couldn't finish a single book for three years, realized that I cannot do both. The passion for coding and eagerness towards technology were slowly diminishing as well. That's when I decided to stop working in the tech field and become a full-time fictional story writer.

It took almost three whole years to start my new career fully, because of various personal reasons. The journey to career switching was actually fun for me. In fact, I had some of my best days for almost a period of one year, doing what I like, or should I say, whatever I want. At last, now in 2025, I am fully concentrating on writing alone, nothing else. I hope to finish books quickly and self-publish them. I hope to tell intriguing stories and have a detailed plan for books in multiple genres (primarily fantasy) for the next two decades.
